A unique opportunity to lead two foundation efforts critical to the revitalization of Newark:

The Newark Community Foundation (NCF) was created in 2007 to become a permanent philanthropic engine for Newark that can respond to the urgent needs and great opportunities in Newark. NCF is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ) which has more than $225 million in assets and has made grants on behalf of its funds and donors of more than $25 million in 2007. CFNJ was founded in 1979 and has over 700 philanthropic funds. NCF is part of CFNJ's strategic plan to 'localize' community foundations throughout New Jersey.

The Newark Police Foundation (NPF) was created in 2007 to support the Newark Police Department. Originated and supported by Mayor's Office, NPF is part of the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ). The annual budget for the NPF is approximately $2 million.

The Director will provide the leadership, vision, creativity and resource development for NCF and NPF and will manage their day-to-day operations. The position will report to leadership boards and advisors for both programs.

The Community Foundation of New Jersey (www.cfnj.org) is hosting the programs. The Director will be an employee of the Community Foundation of New Jersey. The Newark Police Foundation is run in cooperation with the Newark Mayor's Office.

The First Year Priorities include:

Asset Development

Educate donors and make them aware of the Foundations, establish relationships with current donors and reach out to potential donors to raise funds for two programs with the following goals:

  • Newark Community Foundation – $12 million
  • Newark Police Foundation – $2 million
Program Implementation

All three Foundations have distinct missions but are all part of single, unifying goal to accelerate the revitalization of Newark. The Program Implementation will include:

Newark Police Foundation
  • Originate programs that increase the utilization of the NPF's Crimestoppers and Gunstoppers program; and
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of Newark Police Department equipment, technology, and consulting needs; coordinate and prioritize Newark Police Department grant requests to the NPF.
Newark Community Foundation

Oversee the NCF's programs (i.e., Community Eye Program); work with Board and staff to define and refine program guidelines and parameters; encourage donors with no specific designation for their funds to understand the focus of CFNJ programs and how best their funds might be put to use.

Community Education

Make the community aware of the Foundations and heighten their visibility and reputation; represent the Foundations to its multiple constituencies, conveying enthusiasm and information about the mission and purpose to the media, community-based organizations, prospective donors, allied professionals and professional associations; and

Develop knowledge and understanding of local issues, concerns and players, especially nonprofit organizations and with the Newark Police Department become familiar with and involved in key community activities and organizations throughout Newark.

  • A visionary, dedicated and dynamic leader, spokesperson and representative who can translate vision into action; someone who is passionate about networking and representing the organization to critical constituencies;
  • A catalyst who can create excitement and energy around the Foundations' work and encourage others to support the organization; persuasive, persistent and determined in the pursuit of the organization's fundraising and programming goals;
  • Intellectual curiosity; openness to new ideas from all quarters; a level of creativity with good strategic sense, and an ability to influence outcomes with patience and humor; a reputation as a practical problem solver.
