Newark/Essex County Legacy Fund Grants

Families who contribute to or establish Legacy Funds can specify an issue, cause or hometown that they would like to have their charitable legacy impact. The Community Foundation can then respond quickly to ever-changing community needs through grants designed around the spirit of the donor’s wishes.

• BlueWave Public Interest Foundation – BWPIF provides an academic enrichment program for low-income families in the Essex County suburb of Montclair that utilizes individualized learning plans. One-on-one mentoring relationships with tutors are provided to assist the children in achieving academic success. Support was given to purchase the technology equipment used at the new full-day summer program that focused on strengthening students in the core subject areas. Funding was made possible by the Essex County Fund.
• Bloomfield College Nursing School – The majority of the students in the nursing program at Bloomfield College in Essex County come from low-income and minority families and are usually the first generation to go to college. Since they often lack social and family support, funding was given for a Mentoring Program to assist upperclassmen peer tutor/mentors with providing direction, a positive learning environment, encouragement and guidance in learning study skills for new students. Funding was made possible by the Arbor Glen Education Fund.
