Suggestions for China's Earthquake Disaster

Photo of aid distributionA powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck China on May 12th, and already the confirmed death toll is 20,000, with an estimated 26,000 additional buried under the rubble, and 14,000 people still missing. The death toll is expected to climb further as more areas are reached and communications are restored. Over 10 million people have been affected by this tragedy.

The Chinese government has made public requests for assistance, which is emblematic of China's relative openness in dealing with this overwhelming tragedy, as compared to previous disasters. Disaster relief in many forms is desperately needed in China. Although many relief agencies are currently involved with the Myanmar disaster, they are now also helping in China. Financial support is urgently needed for those organizations that are providing valuable assistance.

For those donors who would like to contribute to this cause, we are providing these suggestions for grant recommendations:

  1. Doctors Without Borders has reached Sichuan Province and is focusing on immediate health needs. This organization has worked in China since 1988.
  2. Save the Children. The Chinese Civil Affairs Bureau and the Chinese Education Bureau in Chongqing asked this organization to assist school children by providing tents, tables, chairs and other school supplies.
  3. Direct Relief International is working with two partner facilities to receive packages of surgical equipment.
  4. World Vision, Inc. is providing family survival kits that contain essentials such as food, water, and blankets. World Vision's goal is to reach 107,000 survivors with emergency and recovery assistance. The organization currently has more than 600 staff members working in China.
