The New Jersey Recovery Fund (NJRF) is a joint effort among local and national foundations, New Jersey corporations, and individuals to provide support to New Jersey’s communities and nonprofit organizations that are affected by or responding to Hurricane Sandy. NJRF seeks to address the intermediate and long-term impacts of this natural disaster, serving as a flexible source of financial support to local organizations and communities as they lead and participate in rebuilding and planning efforts throughout the state.
To date, NJRF has made 86 grants totaling more than $4.2 million to pursue smart recovery decisions that will help New Jersey to better withstand the type of damage and disruption caused by Hurricane Sandy. The Fund awarded grants to a range of organizations focused on three broad categories: planning and public policies that promote community resiliency and environmental protection; engaging and informing the public about recovery decisions; and using the arts to foster individual and community healing and revitalization in impacted communities. NJRF also funded Rebuild by Design, an initiative by the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Through the grantmaking process, NJRF identified and supported innovative and sustainable solutions. Often, our grantees stepped into roles that were not fulfilled by state and municipal government or federal agencies. Additionally, the resources we distributed enabled key nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity to engage more broadly and intensely in the recovery process. Our grantee pool represents various sectors, including environmental, media, education, arts, housing, and planning organizations.
NJRF facilitates collaboration among our nonprofit partners leveraging their deep relationships throughout the state and their knowledge of conditions in local communities to ensure that the long-term needs of the state are being met as effectively as possible.
